Robert Schuetz was a standout two-sport athlete at West Liberty in the early 1960s, excelling in both football and tennis at the hilltop campus.
Schuetz enjoyed a stellar gridiron career at Wheeling Central High School, where he is still regarded as one of the finest punters in Ohio Valley history. After one year at Notre Dame on a football scholarship, Schuetz returned to the Ohio Valley and to join the Hilltoppers’ program.
Playing for coaches Al Blatnik and George Kovalick, Schuetz was a hard-nosed running back earning first-team all-WVIAC recognition in 1961. He also participated on one of the college’s first tennis squads, which was coached by Professor Mike Kupersain.
Upon his graduation from West Liberty in 1963, he spent the next two years at the University of Pittsburgh, earning a degree in physical therapy. Schuetz maintained a highly-regarded physical therapy practice for several decades.
