Earl "Empty" Marshall was an All-Conference football player for the legendary Joe Bartell who also gained national recognition in track and field before embarking on a successful coaching and teaching career out west.
Marshall was a two-way lineman and placekicker on Bartell's West Liberty football teams from 1946-48. Bartell was so impressed by Marshall's football acumen that he named him a student assistant coach in 1947. That same season, Marshall was chosen as the center on the All-WVIAC Football Team.
In addition to his football exploits, Marshall kept himself busy during the off-season throwing the javelin as a one-man track team. A national caliber competitor, Marshall was runner-up in the javelin for three straight years (1945-47) at the prestigious Penn Relays - falling just four inches shy of the winning throw in 1947. He placed fifth in the 1948 Relays.
After graduating from West Liberty, Marshall enjoyed a highly-successful teaching and coaching career with the Riverside (Calif.) School District.
