Hall of Fame
An All-WVIAC standout for West Liberty baseball and basketball teams of the early 1960s, Floyd Shuler played a key role in leading the Hilltoppers to their first-ever NAIA national championship.
The slick-fielding shortstop was one of five West Liberty players – joining Fred Chambers, Joe Doerr, Joe Niekro and Frank Ujcich – to earn All-Tournament honors at the 1964 NAIA World Series as the Hilltoppers battled back from the loser's bracket to defeat Grambling in the championship final. Shuler and Chambers were honored as second-team NAIA All-Americans.
The two-time All-WVIAC baseball star also excelled on the hardwood, earning back-to-back All-Conference honors in basketball (1963, 1964) along with a spot on the 1964 WVIAC All-Tournament Team. Shuler was selected as the 1964 Hilltopper Athlete of the Year.
At the time of his induction, Shuler was a professor of Physical Education and head coach of the nationally-ranked golf team at California (Pa.) University. An outstanding amateur golfer in his own right, Shuler was also a highly-regarded basketball official for many years.
