Ed "Buzz" Evans was a multi-sport standout at West Liberty who represented his alma mater with distinction during an outstanding high school coaching career in his native Ohio Valley.
A graduate of Bellaire (Ohio) St. John Central High School, Evans quickly established himself as one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the West Virginia Conference. In his first season on the hilltop, he helped lead the Hilltoppers to an undefeated regular season and a berth in the NAIA national semifinals. Also an outstanding wrestler, Evans was the 1973 WVIAC champion at 177 pounds before closing out his football career as the WVIAC's 1974 Defensive Player of the Year.
The 1975 West Liberty graduate hit the ground running in his teaching and coaching career at Wheeling Park High School. At the time of his induction, Evans' Patriot mat squads had posted a 179-61-2 record in his 15 seasons at the helm and won two West Virginia state championships while reeling off five consecutive OVAC titles from 1990-94. Evans was the 1986 West Virginia Coach of the Year and a three-time OVAC Coach of the Year.
