The first West Liberty football player to appear in a National Football League game, Bob Campiglio Campiglio put Hilltopper football on the national map in 1930 when he scored 102 points to rank among the top 10 scorers in the nation.
A fullback from Milton, Pa., Campiglio made headlines the following year when he led the nation in scoring with 22 touchdowns and 13 conversions for a then-school record 145 points. Nearly half of those points came in an 87-0 rout against Bethel College when he accounted for 67 points on 10 TDs and 7 PATs.
After graduating from West Liberty in 1932, Campiglio entered the National Football League with the Staten Island (N.Y.) Stapletons for a salary of $150 per game. The speedy but hard-nosed fullback had an immediate impact in the pros, leading the NFL with a 4.8 yards per carry average and finishing third in the league with 504 net rushing yards on 104 carries.
A unanimous choice for the All-Time All-WVIAC Football Team, Campiglio enjoyed a successful career as a banking executive in New Canaan, Conn. following his playing days.
