Hall of Fame
Orville Kiger was one of West Liberty's most active athletes during the early years of organized intercollegiate athletics at West Liberty. As was the case with many students in those days, the New Martinsville, W.Va. native earned his normal degree from 1924-26 and returned to campus in 1931 to obtain his bachelor's degree.
An incredibly versatile performer, Kiger was a four-year regular in football, baseball and basketball who also excelled on the tennis courts for two seasons. He was a pitcher/first baseman on several state conference championship baseball teams and was the captain and leading scorer on the Normal School's 1925 basketball team. As a tennis player, he won back-to-back mixed doubles titles and was runner-up in singles in 1925 and 1926.
After completing his master's degree at the University of Michigan in 1940, Kiger returned to the Ohio Valley where he became a familiar face as a teacher, coach and football and basketball official for more than four decades.
