Jim Coulter was a key figure on some of the most dominant football teams in West Liberty history. Coulter was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at defensive end from 1948-51, helping lead the Hilltoppers to an impressive 31-6-1 mark over that span.
The Brackenridge, Pa. native was especially prominent during WLSC's magical 18-0-1 run during the 1949 and 1950 seasons. The Hilltopper defense posted eight shutouts and outscored their opponents by a whopping 552-105 margin in those two years, capping each season with bowl wins against Western Carolina and Appalachian State, respectively. Coulter wrapped up his spectacular career in 1951 with another All-WVIAC citation.
The 1952 graduate served with distinction overseas in the U.S. Air Force over the next four years before returning home to begin a 34-year career with PPG Industries. After retiring from PPG Industries in 1990, he and his wife Anna founded their own manufacturer's representative firm to sell glass-related products in six southeastern states.
