Hall of Fame
A four-year letterman and three-year starter on Joe Bartell's legendary West Liberty football teams of the late 1940s, Leo Miller was an All-WVIAC performer on the gridiron who also excelled in baseball before kicking off a successful coaching career at the high school and collegiate levels.
Miller saw plenty of action as a freshman 1947 with the Hilltoppers' unbeaten (8-0-2) football team, started both ways in 1948 and spent his last two years as a defensive standout on West Liberty's impressive forward wall. The Hilltoppers were 8-1 during Miller's sophomore season before going 9-0-1 - surrendering only 36 points all year - in 1949. Miller was named to the 11-man All-WVIAC team as a senior after the Hilltoppers posted a 9-0 record.
The versatile athlete also made his presence felt on the baseball diamond during his time on the hilltop as the starting catcher on the West Liberty baseball team from 1948-50. After graduation, Miller spent two years in the U.S. Army where he was a two-way starter for the Fort Knox Army team in 1952 before returning home. Miller taught and coached in Ohio for 14 years before returning to the hilltop in 1967.
He was offensive coordinator for West Liberty's back-to-back NAIA playoff teams in 1970 and 1971 and later served as head coach of the football and track programs. After his coaching career ended, Miller stayed on as Chair of the WLSC Department of Health, Physical Education and Safety.
