Although he started his college journey at Notre Dame, Jack Schuetz rose to prominence as a two-sport star at West Liberty from 1958-61. The Warwood (W.Va.) High School graduate began his Hilltopper career on the baseball squad in the spring of 1959 after being forced to sit out the 1958 football season due to eligibility requirements involving his transfer from Notre Dame.
Schuetz was an immediate impact performer on the gridiron for a West Liberty football program looking to rebound after winning a total of just four games in the previous two seasons. One of the last Hilltopper quarterbacks to start on both sides of the football, Schuetz led the WVIAC in passing yardage, passing percentage, and total offense while starting in the defensive backfield and handling all punting chores for the 1959 season. As a result, he was the first West Liberty football player to be nominated for NAIA All-America honors in a decade.
His 1960 season was cut short after four games due to a broken arm, but he still managed to be voted the team's outstanding back for that season. Despite playing with a pin in his arm during the 1961 season, Jack led West Liberty to a 6-2 season, their first winning season since 1956. In addition, he was again an NAIA All-American selection. After graduation, Schuetz entered the insurance business and served as a highly-successful State Farm agent in the local area for many years.
