Donald "Legs" Kiger was a standout center on the only West Liberty men's basketball team to appear in the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. The transfer from Waynesburg (Pa.) College became an immediate starter during the second semester of his freshman season and enjoyed a productive sophomore season, helping lead the Toppers to the WVIAC semifinals for the first time in school history and earning the WVIAC's Most Improved Player Award in the process.
As the only starter taller than six feet, Kiger once again shouldered most of the rebounding load as a junior but it was obvious the team was jelling in preparation for a big run the following year. Those projections were borne out during the 1951-52 season as West Liberty won its first WVIAC Tournament title and earned its first NAIA Tournament bid. The Hilltoppers finished with a 22-6 record - the first 20-win season in school history. One of five members of that historic squad to earn induction into the WLSC Hall of Fame, Kiger also lettered for two seasons on the Hilltopper baseball team.
After graduation, Kiger entered the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. After a short stint as an educator, Donald entered the private business sector and became a leading figure in two different companies.
