Hall of Fame
An incredibly versatile athlete, Ray Prantil was an All-WVIAC selection and team captain in three sports (football, basketball, baseball) during his time on the hilltop in the early 1960s, capping his career by playing a key role in West Liberty's first-ever national championship.
The Follansbee, W.Va. native was a standout receiver on the Hilltopper football team, leading the WVIAC in receptions each year and setting a then-school record with 102 career catches. A perennial All-WVIAC selection, he was also a two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. Also a four-year standout in basketball, Prantil was a two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American as a hard-hitting first baseman on the West Liberty baseball team that won the 1964 NAIA World Series.
After graduation, Prantil began a teaching and coaching career that eventually led him to Penn Hills (Pa.) High School, where he served as lead assistant and defensive coordinator on four consecutive Pennsylvania state championship teams (1976-79). At the time of his induction, Prantil was still teaching and coaching at Penn Hills while operating his own accounting business.
