Oswald "Ossie" Rometo was an All-Conference football standout who starred on Coach Joe Bartell's first West Virginia Conference championship squad and went down in history as one of the WVIAC's all-time gridiron greats.
Rometo came to the hilltop after leading his Tarentum (Pa.) High School team to an unbeaten season as a senior and never missed a beat. He played on Coach Bartell's first West Liberty team in 1933 and was a four-year regular, earning first-team All-WVIAC honors as a senior in 1936 after leading the Hilltoppers to a WVIAC championship.
In addition to his football exploits, Rometo also starred on the 1934 West Liberty baseball team and was voted President of his graduating class in 1937. He was honored in 1974 with a spot on the All-Time All-WVIAC Football Team.
Rometo spent several decades as a teacher, coach, sports official and principal at Turtle Creek (Pa.) High School. After retiring, he published a book entitled "A Collection of Gems," recalling many of the anecdotes, sayings and funny stories of his former students and players.
