Basil G. Lockhart was the starting center on West Liberty football teams during the mid-1920s as the Hilltopper athletic department was finding its footing. He played on the 1926 WLSN (West Liberty State Normal) grid squad that went 6-3 and won the unofficial state college championship in head coach Harry Sweeney's first year at the helm.
After completing his teaching degree at West Liberty, Lockhart went on to finalize his education at West Virginia University but remained an ardent and loyal supporter of his hilltop alma mater and its athletic endeavors.
Lockhart was named acting headmaster at the prestigious Linsly Military Institute in 1940 and remained in that role for the next 32 years until his retirement in 1972. One of the driving forces behind the formation of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference, Lockhart was honored with the 1972 WLSC Alumni Achievement Award.
