WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's golf team sits in seventh place after the opening round of the Mountain East Conference Spring Classic, held Tuesday at Oglebay Resort's Palmer Course.
The Hilltoppers posted a team score of +15 in round one, positioning themselves in the middle of a competitive 17-team field. Glenville State leads the tournament at -6, while California (Pa.) and Fairmont State are tied for second at +4.
West Liberty was paced by a strong opening round from Brandon Lawhon, who carded an even-par round to finish tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard.
Adam Gill also turned in a solid performance for the Hilltoppers, finishing at +1 and tied for 14th, giving West Liberty two golfers inside the top 15 after day one.
Johannes Chang led the Hilltoppers' individual competitors with a +5 round, while Ethan Cook and Justin Doerr each finished at +7. Carter Stewart rounded out the West Liberty lineup at +10.
As a team, the Hilltoppers will look to climb the leaderboard in Wednesday's final round, with several individuals within striking distance of the top 10.
Round two of the MEC Spring Classic is set to begin Wednesday at noon as West Liberty looks to make a move up the standings at Oglebay.
