Hilltoppers Sit Fifth After Opening Round at Vulcan Fire Classic

3/23/2026 7:29:00 PM

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The West Liberty University men's golf team opened play at the 2026 Vulcan Fire Classic on Monday at Lone Pine Country Club, carding a +20 team score to sit in fifth place after the first round.

Wheeling leads the field at +11, while host California (Pa.) and its "B" team are tied for second at +15. Malone (+16) sits just ahead of the Hilltoppers on the leaderboard heading into Tuesday's final round.

West Liberty placed four golfers inside the top 40 individually, led by a strong opening round from Justin Doerr. The Hilltopper standout fired a +3 to finish tied for 10th, putting himself firmly in contention near the top of the leaderboard.

Adam Gill followed with a +4 round, good for a tie for 15th, while Ethan Cook turned in a +5 to sit tied for 18th. Brandon Lawhon and Carter Stewart each posted rounds of +8, landing in a tie for 38th, while Johannes Chang rounded out the lineup at +11.

Doerr's steady round keeps him within striking distance of the tournament leaders, as Malone's Jaxon Rinkes and Gannon's Mattia Parrini share the individual lead at even par.

The final round is Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m.
