Wischi shares Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year honors

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team was well-represented Friday morning when the West Virginia Conference coaches announced the results of their 2009-10 All-WVIAC balloting.

Hilltopper freshman Raissa Wischi became the seventh West Liberty standout to earn a WVIAC Player of the Year Award and also collected Freshman of the Year honors. She was joined on the All-WVIAC First Team by senior standout Marina Quintana.

The Hilltopper women's tennis program has now produced 12 WVIAC Players of the Year in the 24 years since the award was instituted in 1987.

Wischi, who came to West Liberty from Sao Paulo, Brazil, shared the conference's Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Awards with West Virginia State's Andreea Slusarciuc after the two newcomers were tied in voting by the league coaches.

Wischi compiled a 7-1 record in WVIAC singles action this fall, which included a 6-1 3-6 6-2 victory over Slusarciuc in their only head-to-head meeting. Slusarciuc, who hails from Timosoara, Romania, was unbeaten in her other 8 league singles matches.

Quintana followed up her 2009 WVIAC Player of the Year Award with yet another dominant season on the courts, competing at No. 2 singles and teaming with Emma Windsor at No. 1 doubles. It was the third consecutive First-Team All-WVIAC selection for the native of Las Palmas, Spain.

West Virginia State's John Simms won the WVIAC Coach of the Year Award.

Coach Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers advanced to the Semi-finals of 2010 WVIAC Championships Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over Fairmont. West Liberty will next face #2 seed Charleston at 6pm.
