Hilltoppers Sit Tied for Third After Opening Round at Battle at Brunswick

CALABASH, N.C. — The West Liberty University men's golf team turned in a strong opening round Thursday at the Larry and Wally Edgell Battle at Brunswick, finishing tied for third after day one at Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort.

The Hilltoppers posted a +16 team score, putting them level with Charleston and just six strokes behind tournament leader California (Pa.), which sits at +10 after the first round. Winston-Salem State is currently second at +15.

West Liberty was paced by Justin Doerr, who fired an impressive 1-over-par round to finish the day tied for fourth individually among a large field. Doerr sits just one shot off the lead as three players are tied atop the leaderboard at even par.

The Hilltoppers placed three golfers inside the top 20 following the opening round. Ethan Cook and Brandon Lawhon each posted 4-over rounds, placing them tied for 16th, giving West Liberty solid depth on the leaderboard.

Carter Stewart added a 7-over round to finish tied for 43rd, while Adam Gill rounded out the Hilltopper lineup with an 8-over score, placing him tied for 50th.

Through the first 18 holes, the Hilltoppers find themselves firmly in contention heading into the remaining rounds of the three-day tournament.

The Larry and Wally Edgell Battle at Brunswick, hosted by Fairmont State, continues through Saturday in Calabash, North Carolina.
