West Liberty Women’s Tennis Set for Weekend Road Matches

4/10/2026 8:30:00 AM

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team returns to the court this weekend with a pair of road matches, traveling to Salem on Saturday for a non-conference matchup before continuing Mountain East Conference play Sunday at West Virginia Wesleyan.

First serve for both matches is scheduled for noon.

West Liberty enters the weekend at 1-7 overall and 0-4 in MEC play, looking to build momentum as the regular season enters its final stretch.

In their most recent outing, the Hilltoppers battled but fell 5-2 to Frostburg State. Freshman Maria Martirosyan highlighted the day with an impressive straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, winning both sets in tiebreakers. Kaylex Gibson added a dominant win at No. 6 singles, while the Black and Gold showed competitive efforts throughout the lineup.

Saturday's matchup presents an opportunity for West Liberty to gain confidence in non-conference play.

The Hilltoppers hold a recent win over Salem, including a dominant 7-0 sweep in the last meeting during the 2021-22 season. Overall, the series has been competitive, with Salem winning two of the previous three matchups prior to that result.

Salem enters the weekend with a 5-4 record and has shown the ability to compete in tight matches, including multiple 4-3 decisions this season. The Tigers are coming off a busy stretch of competition and will be looking to defend their home courts.

West Liberty shifts back to conference play Sunday against West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon.

Wesleyan enters the weekend at 10-5 overall and 0-2 in MEC play, despite strong non-conference results throughout the season.

Historically, the Hilltoppers have had success in the series, holding a 10-3 advantage since 2011. West Liberty has also been strong on the road against Wesleyan, posting a 5-0 record in away matches during that span.

However, Wesleyan claimed last year's meeting 5-2, snapping West Liberty's recent momentum in the series.
