2025 WLU Football Position Preview: Kickers, Punters, and Returners

8/19/2025 3:00:00 PM

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Special teams can often be the difference between winning and losing, and head coach Roger Waialae enters the 2025 season confident in the depth and versatility of his kicking unit.

The Hilltoppers will have three kickers to choose from this fall — freshman Chase Hile, graduate student Morgan Williamson, and redshirt sophomore Colin McDermitt. Hile, a standout at Brooke High School, showcased his talent for Team West Virginia in the OVAC All-Star Football Game. Williamson returns after handling 18 kickoffs in 2024, averaging 44.3 yards per kick with one touchback. McDermitt is expected to take over punting duties after logging two punts last season, including a 50-yard effort.

Long snapping duties are still being contested, with Wes Houston, Nolan Shimp, Mason Fraley, and Joey Shaffstall all in the mix. For holding, none of the Hilltoppers' quarterbacks have previous game experience, but Jaren Brickner is likely to take on the role.

In the return game, West Liberty has multiple explosive options. Trey Singleton, Hunter Patterson, Rashid Sesay, and Anthony May are all capable of making big plays in both punt and kickoff return situations.

With reliable legs, versatile specialists, and several dangerous return threats, West Liberty's special teams unit looks poised to be a strength in the Hilltoppers' 100th season of football.

The Hilltoppers open the season August 28 at Walsh University, the home opener is September 6th against Seton Hill University at 1 p.m. at West Family Stadium.
