Patterson, Horsley Take MEC Weekly Football Honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Two West Liberty standouts earned Mountain East Conference weekly honors on Monday following their roles in the Hilltoppers' thrilling 68–67 season-ending win over Wheeling.
Running back Hunter Patterson was named the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, while linebacker Bre'Andre Horsley was selected as the MEC Defensive Player of the Week.

The duo played major roles in West Liberty's dramatic victory, which closed out the Roger Waialae era in unforgettable fashion.

Patterson delivered one of the most dominant performances in program history, finishing with 201 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns, tying the school's single-game record. He added a 62-yard receiving touchdown, giving him six total touchdowns, which matches the West Liberty single-game mark for total TDs.

The sophomore piled up 275 all-purpose yards, including a game-changing 68-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter that briefly gave WLU its largest lead at 55–45. Patterson scored on runs of 2, 25, 1, 21 and 12 yards and hauled in his long receiving score early in the second half.

His performance helped power an offense that produced 783 total yards and repeatedly answered Wheeling's surges.

On the other side of the ball, Horsley turned in one of the best defensive efforts of his career. The junior linebacker posted six tackles, including one sack, and added a fumble recovery that helped stall a Wheeling drive and swing momentum back toward the Hilltoppers.

Horsley's play came during the highest-scoring game in series history and proved critical as West Liberty's defense made two late stops — including the game-sealing fumble recovery in the final seconds.
