Four Hilltoppers Gain Recognition as All-MEC Selections

Bridgeport, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference released the 2023-24 men's basketball all-conference teams on Tuesday afternoon with a total of four West Liberty University athletes earning recognition. Highlighting the honors for the Hilltoppers were Christian Montague who earned a spot on the All-MEC First Team and Kyler Daugustino was named the MEC Freshman of the Year. Also being recognized were John Korte and Zach Rasile who were selected to the All-MEC Second Team.

Montague earned All-MEC honors for the second time in his career as he was named to the All-MEC First Team on Tuesday afternoon as he closed the regular season by averaging 11.4 points, 4.4 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game while he shot the ball 44.8 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from 3-point range. He has scored in double figures in 19 games while reaching the 20-point mark on four occasions, including a season-high of 23 points at Charleston and in a home win over Glenville State. In the win against the Pioneers, he went 8-of-10 from the field and was 7-of-9 from beyond the arc, knocking down the most 3-pointers by a Hilltopper this season. He ranked tenth in the league in total 3-pointers made and was 11th in 3-pointers per game (2.00), connecting on 56-of-147 (38.1%) from deep. He also ranked among the top players in the conference in assists ranking third with 122 total and fourth with 4.4 assists per game, while additionally he ranked third in the MEC and 32nd in DII with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.49. Montague was a key piece of the WLU defense as he ranked fourth with 44 total steals and was fifth in the conference with 1.57 steals per game. He dished out four or more assists in 19 games, made two or more 3-pointers in 17 games, grabbed four or more rebounds in 16 games, and collected two or more steals in 13 games.

Kyler Daugustino | Freshman | Guard | Albany, Ohio | Alexander
Daugustino became the fourth Hilltopper to win MEC Freshman of the Year honors on Tuesday afternoon, and is the first to receive it since 2019, as he averaged 8.9 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.0 steal per game while shooting the ball 51.4 percent from the field and 75.9 percent from the free throw line. During the season he scored in double figures on 13 occasions, including setting a season-high of 17 points in a home win over Salem where he went 8-of-8 from the field. In addition, he notched eight games of three or more rebounds, seven games of two or more assists, and five games of two or more steals in 2023-24.

John Korte | Graduate Student | Forward | Watertown, Mass. | Watertown | Wheeling
In his lone season on the hilltop, Korte garnered the second All-MEC honor of his career as he was named to the All-MEC Second Team on Tuesday afternoon after averaging 10.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game while shooting the ball 48.4 percent from the field and 79.5 percent from the free throw line. He scored in double figures on 15 occasions, which included a pair of 20-point games where he scored a season-high of 21 points in wins over Wheeling and Frostburg State. In addition, he grabbed six or more rebounds in 17 contests and secured double figures twice. He was one of just two Hilltoppers to collect a double-double this season as he tied a season-high of 21 points and 12 rebounds against the Bobcats on February 14. Korte has also dished out three or more assists in 13 games, collected two or more steals in five games, and recorded two or more blocks in three games. He is among the top free throw shooters in the MEC as he ranks fourth in free throws made, fifth in free throw attempts, and is tenth in free throw percentage, going 105-of-132 (79.5%) from the charity stripe.

Zach Rasile | Junior | Guard | McDonald, Ohio | McDonald
Rasile claimed his first career All-MEC accolade on Tuesday afternoon as he was named All-MEC Second Team after averaging 11.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 0.9 steals per game while shooting the ball 44.5 percent from the field, 38.0 percent from 3-point range, and was 83.7 percent at the free throw line. He scored in double figures 16 times during the 2023-24 season and reached the 20-point mark in three games, including scoring a career-high 24 points in a home win over West Virginia Wesleyan. In addition, he has grabbed four or more rebounds in 13 games, dished out three or more assists in 11 games, and collected two or more steals in six games. He was among the top sharpshooters from beyond the arc in the MEC as he ranked sixth in total 3-pointers made and was seventh in 3-pointers per game (2.22), knocking down 60-of-158 (38.0%) on the season. This season he made a shot from deep in 25 of the 27 games he played in while making two or more in 20 contests and three or more in nine match-ups.
