WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – There are coaches who win, and then there are those who redefine what winning looks like. Jim Crutchfield did both at West Liberty, building not just a powerhouse, but a standard that still echoes across Division II basketball.
Jim Crutchfield is the architect of West Liberty's golden era, transforming the Hilltoppers into a national brand during his 13 seasons at the helm.
From 2004 to 2017, he compiled a staggering 359-61 record and an .855 winning percentage — the highest in NCAA history among coaches with at least 10 years at the helm. His name stands alongside legends such as Adolph Rupp, John Wooden, and Mike Krzyzewski, but his impact at West Liberty goes far beyond numbers.
A Foundation Built Before the Spotlight
Long before the national rankings, Final Fours, and packed crowds inside the ASRC, Crutchfield was building a culture of excellence on the hilltop.
From 1989 to 2004, he served as West Liberty's head men's tennis coach, while also leading the women's program from 1989 to 2003. During that time, he guided the Hilltoppers to a combined 11 conference championships and earned eight WVIAC Tennis Coach of the Year honors.
That success laid the foundation for everything that followed — a culture rooted in discipline, consistency, and competitive excellence.
Building a National Power
When Crutchfield took over the basketball program, West Liberty didn't just improve — it became a powerhouse.
His teams produced thirteen 20-win seasons and five 30-win campaigns, becoming a fixture in the NCAA Division II national rankings. The Hilltoppers made eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by four straight Elite Eight trips, three Final Fours, and a run to the national championship game.
West Liberty spent 112 consecutive weeks ranked in the top 25 — the longest streak in Division II history — including 45 appearances at No. 1. His teams also posted a 24-9 NCAA Tournament record, the best winning percentage among active Division II programs at the time.
A five-time WVIAC Basketball Coach of the Year and three-time West Virginia Sportswriters Association College Coach of the Year, Crutchfield built a dynasty defined by both consistency and excellence.
Success Beyond the Hilltop
Crutchfield's impact didn't end when he left West Liberty.
Now the head coach at Nova Southeastern, he has continued to elevate programs to the national stage. His teams have reached the NCAA Division II National Championship game three times, capturing national titles in 2023 and 2025. In both championship seasons, he was named the NABC National Coach of the Year.
With a career record of 563-88, his sustained success across multiple programs only reinforces what Hilltopper fans witnessed for more than a decade — a coach capable of building greatness anywhere.
A Legacy Defined by Moments
For Crutchfield, the memories aren't defined by a single season — but by the journey.
"So many from both tennis and basketball… it's hard to pick. Those wins over ranked Wheeling and Fairmont are memorable. All five trips to the Elite Eight were certainly memorable, especially the National Championship game."
Still, one moment rises above the rest.
"If I had to pick an actual moment, it was our first regional championship when the final buzzer sounded and the team poured onto the floor. It was surreal. I still remember our announcer Reid Amos… Tim Koenig standing with his hands over his head. What an incredible feeling that was."
It was the moment West Liberty arrived — and never looked back.
More Than Wins
For Crutchfield, the legacy isn't just about banners or records — it's about pride and people.
"It's about pride. I was always proud to tell someone I was a coach at West Liberty. Even today I'm very proud that I coached at West Liberty and I never hesitate to mention that."
That pride extended far beyond the court.
"I'm not sure about who might have been influential, but I'm sure about all the friends and relationships formed there. It's been years since I left the Hilltop, but rarely a day goes by that I don't have contact with a former coach, friend, student, or athlete from West Liberty."
A Simple Message
When asked what advice he would give to today's student-athletes, Crutchfield kept it simple:
"Carpe diem."
Seize the moment — just like his teams did, time and time again.
The Standard He Set
Jim Crutchfield didn't just elevate West Liberty men's basketball — he defined its golden era.
From championship success on the tennis courts to national prominence on the hardwood — and continued dominance on the national stage — his impact spans generations.
A program once chasing relevance became a national contender. A gym became a destination. A style became an identity.
And years later, the echoes remain — in the pace of play, the expectations, and the pride of wearing the black and gold.
Because at West Liberty, excellence isn't just remembered.
It was built.
