MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's and women's track teams made a strong impression at this weekend's Mountaineer Showcase, hosted by West Virginia University.
Not only did Coach
Justin Simpson's rising squads set three more school records, the Hilltoppers added to their projected depth for next week's Mountain East Conference championships by posting multiple qualifying performances on both sides of the ledger.
Junior sprinter/hurdler
Hailey Carreon continued her year-long assault on the WLU record book with a school-record 12.37 clocking in the 100-meter dash – one of the top five times in the MEC this spring. Carreon also joined with
Abbe Stackpole,
Makayla Rolince and
Amari Poole in a school-record 4x100 relay of 49.21 seconds. That ranks among the MEC's top three this season.
The Hilltoppers' strength in the field events was also on full display with reigning MEC Athlete of the Week
Kelsi Hulit winning the discus and
Kennedy Martin taking the shot put event. Martin and Hulit are 1-2 in the MEC shot put ranks this spring while Hulit has the top discus throw with Martin at No. 3.
On the men's side, freshman
Mikhi Anderson continued to lower his own school record in the 110 hurdles. His winning time of 14.58 seconds not only ranks No. 2 in the MEC this spring, it's fourth in the Atlantic Region and missed the NCAA Division II Provisional qualifying standard by less than one-tenth of a second.
Also hitting the winners' circle for the WLU men was freshman
Gage Patterson with a season-best long jump of 22 feet, 1 inch, pushing him up into the MEC top five.
The Mountain East Conference Championship meet will be held May 1-3 at Glenville State.
