Phillips Shatters 5K Record at GVSU Holiday Open

12/9/2022 9:28:00 PM

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The West Liberty University track and field program took six distance runners to compete in various 5k heats at the Grand Valley State University Holiday Open today. Danah Phillips headlined the day shattering the school record.

Phillips turned it up in the final two kilometers and raced his way to the front of his heat crossing the line in 14:26.52 breaking the school record set by Philip White last February by nearly 30 seconds. Not only did the all-region cross country star reset a school record, he also hit an NCAA provisional mark meaning he will be considered by the NCAA for a place in the national meet.

Philip White and Brenden Sands posted times of 14:56.63 and 15:09.89 to finish ninth and 14th in Phillips' heat

Hannah Kemp was the lone competitor for the women's squad and raced to a second place finish in her heat with an 18:06.05.

Graduate transfer Ben Bumgarner finished the day with a 14:51.86 in the late night race, while freshman Robert Allen ran a 15:33.69 in the first race of the day finishing 15th in his heat.

West Liberty will take some time off over the holiday break and be back at it after the New Year at Muskingum University on January 14.
