GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's and women's track teams opened their spring season with several impressive performances over the weekend at the Brandi Bowen Invitational hosted by Glenville State College.
Coach
Justin Simpson's Hilltoppers won multiple events - including a record-setting performance by
Adam O'Donnell in the decathlon – and the WLU women's team earned runner-up honors in a 14-team field.
"It was just a fantastic two days," Simpson said. "A great season opener for both teams with several wins and Adam setting a school record in the decathlon. I'd say our season's off to a pretty good start."
O'Donnell dominated the decathlon, winning nearly every event on Saturday and Sunday to rack up a school record 6,062 points. That broke the previous mark of 5,923, set by
George Maddox at the 2016 MEC Championships.
Tavian Richardson also came up with a win for the men in the 800 meters while
Danah Phillips was second at 1500 meters.
There were no records set on the women's side but there were plenty of outstanding performances.
Kelsi Hulit had a big day in the field events, winning the discus, placing second in the shot and javelin and sixth in the hammer.
Kennedy Martin won the javelin as WLU had four of the top eight placers in that event.
Aubree Story was second in the high jump and
Emily Louk took runner-up honors at 800 meters while
Hailey Carreon placed in three events: the 100 hurdles (3rd), the 100 meter dash (5th) and the long jump (6th).
The Hilltopper men and women will be back in action on Saturday when they head to Morgantown for a meet at West Virginia University.
