CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Liberty University sophomore
Hannah Kemp ran away from the field here at Coonskin Park on Friday to win the Charleston Winter Cross Country Invitational by nearly a minute.
It was the second impressive victory in as many outings on the young cross country season for Coach
Justin Simpson's returning All-Region standout. Kemp had debuted earlier this month with a convincing win in the North Carolina Wesleyan Classic.
The Bethesda, Ohio native was once again in mid-season form on Friday as she negotiated the challenging 6,000-meter layout in an impressive 21:56. It took 50 seconds for another runner to reach the finish line with Concord's Emily Wallace taking second place in 22:46.1.
Nichole Groseclose also posted a Top 10 finish for the Black and Gold, placing ninth in a time of 24:33.1.
Charleston took team honors with 38 points while Concord (46) held off West Liberty (56) for third place.
Jared Ullom and
Brenden Sands led the way for the Hilltoppers in the men's 8,000-meter race. Ullom was the first WLU runner across the line, finishing 12th in a time of 26:35.3. Sands was right behind in 13th place at 26:37.9.
The Hilltopper men also took third in the team standings behind first place Charleston and runner-up Concord.
