BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Liberty University men's basketball standout Dalton Bolon added NCAA Division II All-Region honors to his rapidly-growing list of post-season awards on Friday when the 2018-19 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-Atlantic Region Team was announced.
The leading scorer on the highest-scoring team in the nation, Bolon was one of 10 players – and the lone sophomore – to earn All-Region recognition in voting by sports information directors from the Atlantic Region schools. Bolon was a second-team selection.
The 6-4 sharpshooter from Gnadenhutten, Ohio averaged nearly 21 points a game in helping lead No. 9-ranked WLU to its second straight Mountain East Conference championship and 10th consecutive NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament bid.
Bolon, who has played the entire season with a patch covering his left eye due to a serious injury over the summer, has scored more than 1,100 points in less than two full seasons and is one of only two MEC players named to the Top 50 Watch List for the Bevo Francis Award honoring the best player in small college basketball.
The model of consistency, Bolon enters NCAA Tournament play with 19 games of 20 or more points this season and topped the 30-point mark on five occasions. He set career highs of 39 points and 9 3-point field goals in a Feb. 14 rout of West Virginia State and currently ranks among the nation's leaders in points, 3-point field goals and 3-point field goal percentage.
The first-team unit in the talent-laden region includes the top four scorers in NCAA Division II basketball. Atlantic Region Player of the Year Will Vorhees from Notre Dame ranks No. 3 at 28.3 ppg. He's joined on the first-team unit by Shaw's Amir Hinton (1st, 29.4 ppg.), Concord's Tommy Bolte (2nd, 28.5 ppg.) and Kutztown's Anthony Lee (4th, 27.4 ppg.). Senior forward Jacobo Diaz of No. 2-ranked Indiana (Pa.) rounds out the first team unit.
Accompanying Bolon on the second team are IUP's Dante Lombardi, Vonte Montgomery of Fairmont State, Slippery Rock's Micah Till and Josh Williams of East Stroudsburg.
All first-team selections advance to the national ballot for the 2018-19 D2CCA All-America Team, which will be announced later this month.
Bolon and his Hilltopper teammates are the No. 2 seed in this weekend's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. They tip off against No. 7 seed East Stroudsburg at 5 p.m. Saturday inside the Kovalchick Center on the campus of Indiana (Pa.) University.
