DANIELS, W.Va. – The combined challenges of a rain-soaked golf course and a tightly packed field proved too much for the West Liberty University men's golf team to overcome here Tuesday during the second round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
As darkness descended on the fog-enshrouded Cobb Course at Glade Springs, Coach
Mike Ricci's Hilltoppers lost a sudden-death playoff to West Virginia Wesleyan and missed the cut for the sixth and final spot in Wednesday's championship round.
West Liberty and the Bobcats turned in matching 36-hole scores of 627 at the end of Tuesday's rain-delayed second round. The teams were still tied after the first playoff hole but Wesleyan played the second hole in 1-over-par, one stroke better than the Hilltoppers.
Concord led the team scoring with a 611, followed by Davis & Elkins (612), Charleston (617), Fairmont State (620) and Urbana (625). They will be joined by West Virginia Wesleyan to play for the team championship at the Cobb Course on Wednesday.
The news wasn't all bad for the Black and Gold on Tuesday as the top three golfers not competing for one of the finalists will continue their pursuit of tournament medal honors on Wednesday as individuals and two of them –
Caleb Moore and
Howard Peterson IV – are Hilltoppers.
Moore was WLU's low man through the first 36 holes and stands all alone in sixth place at 6-over-par 150 heading into the final 18 holes. Peterson is in a 3-way tie for 12th place at 9-over-par 153.
Glenville State's Kyle Chung was the only player to break par for the first two rounds. His 1-under-par 143 gives him a 3-shot lead over his closest pursuers heading into the final 18 holes.
