DANIELS, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's golf team was just three shots off the lead here Monday following the opening round of the Mountain East Conference championship tournament at Glade Springs.
Coach
Mike Ricci's Hilltoppers, MEC runners-up each of the past two years, were one of several teams that swapped the lead back and forth throughout a round that ended with six of the 10 teams within six strokes of first place in the team standings.
Concord will take a one-shot lead into Tuesday's second round of the 54-hole event after posting an 18-over-par score of 306 at the challenging 7,114-yard par-72 track. Fairmont State was second at 307 followed by Davis & Elkins (308), West Liberty (309), Charleston (311) and Urbana (312).
Caleb Moore led the way for the Black and Gold on Monday. His 1-over-par round of 73 put him within one shot of the medal lead shared by Charleston's Mitch Hoffman and Glenville State's Kyle Chung at even-par 72.
Howard Peterson IV also came up big for WLU on Monday. His 3-over-par 75 was one of the day's top 10 rounds.
Heavy rains in the afternoon forced a stoppage of play in the first round of the MEC women's championship tournament. The women will return to the course at 8 a.m. Monday to complete their round, pushing the start of the men's second round back to approximately 9 a.m.
The tournament is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.
