WEIRTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's golf team nailed down four of the top eight places here Saturday to win the Williams CC Collegiate tournament at the challenging Northern Panhandle layout.
Heavy rains had washed out the event earlier this month but sunny skies and cool temperatures greeted the five teams who were able to return for Saturday's make-up date.
Coach
Mike Ricci's Hilltoppers, who served as host school for the tournament, were the only squad to break 300 on the rolling 6,586 yard, par 72 track with an 8-over-par 296.
That gave the Black and Gold a 7-shot victory over runner-up Charleston (303). Fairmont State was one shot farther back at 304 with Davis & Elkins close behind at 305. Wheeling Jesuit rounded out the shortened field with a 321.
Depth was the key for WLU on Saturday. All-Region junior
Sean Trapp was low man for the Hilltoppers, finishing third in the medal chase at 1-over-par 73. Ike Judy and Howie Peterson were one shot back in a fourth-place tie at 2-over-par 74 while
Austin Lis finished in a three-way tie for seventh at 3-over-par 75.
Medal honors went to Fairmont State's Marco Oliverio, who came in at 1-under-par 71. Charleston's Christian McKisic was runner-up at even-par 72.
The West Liberty men return to action on Oct. 8 when they tee off in the first round of the Mountain East Conference championship tournament at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, W.Va.
