BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Liberty University men's basketball standout Dan Monteroso has been honored as a first-team selection on the 2016-17 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) All-Atlantic Region Team.
This is the latest in a growing list of postseason honors for the St. Clairsville, Ohio native, who exploded onto the Mountain East Conference scene this year as a graduate transfer after playing three seasons of Big 10 football at Purdue.
A first-team NCAA Division II Academic All-American with a perfect 4.00 GPA in his graduate courses on the hilltop, Monteroso also earned first-team All-MEC honors in basketball after helping lead Coach Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers to a 28-4 record that included another Top 10 national ranking, an MEC Tournament championship and an eighth straight NCAA Division II Tournament bid.
The leading scorer (18.2 ppg.) on a West Liberty team that averaged nearly 100 points per game, Monteroso is also one of the 50 semifinalists for the 2017 Bevo Francis Award honoring the nation's top small-college basketball player and earned a berth on the MEC All-Tournament Team as a key factor in WLU's scintillating run to the tournament title in Charleston, which was capped by a 67-65 victory against No. 1-ranked Fairmont State in the championship game.
After putting up All-MEC numbers as the leading receiver on the Hilltopper football team in the fall, Monteroso made a triumphant return to basketball with the Black and Gold. Showing no evidence of rust after three years away from the sport, he immediately earned a spot in the starting lineup and emerged as one of the MEC's marquee players.
The sweet-shooting southpaw battled through an assortment of injuries to post 25 double-figure scoring game in 29 outings. He had 13 games with 20 or more points and went for 30 or more points three times. Monteroso had a career-high 40 points in a non-conference win at Nova Southeastern (Fla.).
He shot better than 60 percent (208-of-346) from the floor, made 41 percent (33-of-80) of his 3-point attempts and knocked down 79 percent (78-of-99) of his free throws. In addition to his scoring exploits, he also ranked second on the West Liberty team with an average of 5.6 rebounds per game.
Joining Monteroso as first-team All-Region selections are Fairmont State senior Matt Bingaya, Notre Dame senior Will Vorhees, Shippensburg junior Dustin Sleva and Indiana (Pa.) sophomore Jacobo Diaz. Second-team selections include seniors Ray Anderson of Virginia Union, Josh Johnson of Kutztown and Thomas Wimbush of Fairmont State along with Edinboro junior Jaymon Mason and redshirt freshman Amir Hinton of Lock Haven. Bingaya was named Player of the Year
All first-team selections advance to the national ballot for the 2016-17 D2CCA All-America Team, which will be announced later this month.
The Division II CCA is in its second year of sponsorship for the All-Region awards conducted annually by the region's sports information directors. The Atlantic Region is composed of teams from the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) along with independent Bluefield State.
