Two Tough Losses for WLU Grapplers

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The West Liberty University wrestling team lost a pair of tightly-contested matches in a Saturday afternoon quadrangular at Heiges Fieldhouse on the campus of Shippensburg University.
Coach Mitch Smith's Hilltoppers dropped a 26-17 decision to LIU-Post (N.Y.) in their first match of the day before battling host Shippensburg to a 19-19 deadlock only to see the Red Raiders walk away with a 20-19 nod on criteria.
In the opener, Zach Brown got West Liberty off to a good start with a 1-0 decision at 125 pounds but LIU-Post rebounded with four straight wins to open up a 17-3 lead.
DeMadre Turner tried to stop the bleeding for the Hilltoppers with a 5-1 win at 165 pounds but the New York squad all but clinched the nod with a fall at 174, going up 23-6 with just three weight classes remaining.
A forfeit at 184 and a clutch technical fall from Garrett Vulcano at 197 trimmed the margin to 23-17 but LIU-Post eked out a 5-3 decision at 285 to wrap up the win.
The Shippensburg match was a see-saw affair from the start.
The Red Raiders opened with a 3-1 win at 125 pounds but West Liberty got a 12-3 major decision from Bryce Humphreys at 133 and a 6-1 win from 141-pounder Josh Ridgeway to grab a 7-3 lead.
A fall and a major decision put Shippensburg back on top, 13-7, but Turner answered with a 5-2 win at 165 to close the gap to 13-10.
Shippensburg pushed the lead to 16-10 with a victory at 174 but Nate Dawson gutted out a 7-4 win for West Liberty at 184 and a forfeit put WLU on top, 19-16, heading into the 285-pound bout.
The Red Raiders got an 8-2 win at 285 to forge the 19-19 tie, sending the match into criteria. Officials had to go down the list to the third criteria to award the win to Shippensburg.
The Hilltopper wrestlers close out the regular season on Feb. 11 with a 7 p.m. match at Gannon.
