Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Zac Grossenbacher scored his 1,000th career point and the No. 7-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a 93-82 victory against Glenville State at the ASRC.
Coach
Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers (24-2, 18-2) never trailed in the second half but needed a strong finish to put away the upset-minded Pioneers (11-13, 8-12), who were shooting for their second straight Top 25 upset after knocking off No. 23 Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday night.
Still playing without injured leading scorer
Dan Monteroso, West Liberty carried a 46-39 lead into the locker room at halftime but Glenville hung tough and trailed just 74-73 after a pair of Jon Dunmyer free throws with 5:35 to play.
Senior
Devin Hoehn answered at the other end with a spinner in the lane and Grossenbacher made it 79-73 with a deep 3-pointer at the 4:30 mark.
Sophomore guard
David Dennis came up with a steal and went 1-for-2 from the foul line for an 80-73 bulge, matching WLU's largest lead of the second half with 3:59 to play.
The Pioneers tried to stop the bleeding with a conventional 3-point play by Terry Davis but a pair of free throws and another 3-pointer from Hoehn pushed the count to 85-76 with less than 3 minutes remaining and Glenville never threatened again.
"This was not our best game but we survived," Crutchfield said. "We made some big shots down the stretch and we were finally able to string some stops together and create a little separation."
Brandon Smith came off the bench with a career-high 18 points to lead West Liberty while Hoehn and
Clay Guillozet finished with 16 points each. Dennis stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals while
Brady Arnold added 11 points and 4 assists off the bench. Grossenbacher chipped in with 8 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. His last basket of the night, a put-back in the final minute, pushed his career total to 1,001 points.
Dunmyer tossed in a game-high 34 points for the Pioneers. Davis added 14 points and Brett Morris finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
"I thought Brandon came in and gave us a nice lift on the offensive end," Crutchfield said, "and Devin made some big shots late, both at the rim and from the arc.
David Dennis made several big defensive plays that really helped. It wasn't always pretty but we found a way."
Hoehn, Grossenbacher and fellow senior
Zak Kirkbride were recognized prior to the game in Senior Day ceremonies.
"Those three guys will definitely be missed here. They put a ton of wins on the board," Crutchfield said.
"From my standpoint, I couldn't ask for three nicer guys than Devin, Zac and Zak. As much as I've yelled at them and got on them over the years, they always just come back smiling. I won't just miss them in the locker room. I'll miss just talking to them around campus every day. They're great young men."
West Liberty returns to action on Thursday when the Hilltoppers hit the road for a 7:30 p.m. game at Urbana.
