GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The unbeaten and No. 17-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team lit up the Waco Center scoreboard for 75 first-half points Saturday in rolling to a 130-100 victory at Glenville State.
Coach
Ben Howlett's Hilltoppers (4-0, 1-0) came out cold at the start and the host Pioneers (0-4, 0-1) led by as many as nine points in the early going.
It didn't take long for the Black and Gold to find the range and once they did, they turned a see-saw contest into a runaway.
Glenville took its biggest lead of the afternoon, 14-5, on a Brooks Ely layup at 16:15 of the opening half but Jordan Watson answered with a quick 3-pointer that seemed to shake West Liberty out of its doldrums.
Watson's long-range bomb touched off one of the Hilltoppers' patented surges as they outscored the Pioneers, 19-5, over the next four minutes.
A James Griffin 3-pointer at the 12:09 mark put West Liberty ahead to stay, 24-21, and WLU never looked back.
Glenville was still within range, 44-35, after a Dwayne Chastain layup with 5:23 left in the half but when Watson knocked down another 3-pointer to give WLU a 47-35 lead as the clock ticked past the 5-minute mark, the Hilltoppers shifted into overdrive.
Starting with Watson's bonus bomb, West Liberty torched the nets for a staggering 31 points over the last 5-plus minutes of the first half to take a 75-47 lead into the locker room and the game was over.
All-American Dan Monteroso led the way for the Hilltoppers with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists, hitting 10-of-14 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc.
Watson drained five 3-pointers and finished with 20 points while James Griffin stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.
Freshman Dalton Bolon notched his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Luke Dyer, Marlon Moore, Tyler Primmer and Keegan Saben all finished with 9 points.
Darhuis Nunn tossed in a game-high 33 points for Glenville.
The Hilltoppers return home to host West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the ASRC.
