SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The No. 4-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team opened the game on a 15-5 run and never looked back here Saturday in rolling to a 93-76 victory against Notre Dame at Murphy Gym.
It was the 10th straight win for Coach
Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers (17-1, 11-1) while the Falcons (13-5, 7-5) went down to defeat for the third time in their last four outings.
West Liberty hit the ground running, knocking down a trio of 3-point shots in the game's opening salvo with
Devin Hoehn's bonus bomb producing a 15-5 lead with 16:43 still showing on the first half clock.
The margin never dropped below double-figures the rest of the way but the Hilltoppers were far from finished.
With Notre Dame struggling to find the range, the Black and Gold continued to pour it on and the lead hit 20 points, 29-9, when
Dan Monteroso squeezed inside for a twisting layup just four minutes later.
The Hilltoppers pushed the margin as high as 24 points before settling for a 52-29 lead at intermission.
Hoehn gave West Liberty its largest lead of the afternoon in the second half, 70-43, with another 3-pointer as the clock ticked under 12 minutes but the Falcons refused to fold.
Drew Scarberry came off the bench to hit four straight 3-pointers for the hosts, cutting the deficit to 70-55 with 9:35 still remaining and Crutchfield called for a timeout.
David Dennis drained a 3-pointer coming out of the timeout and
Clay Guillozet followed with back-to-back layups to push the lead back out to a much more comfortable 77-55 with 8:30 to go and the Hilltoppers were on their way.
Dennis led six double-figure scorers for WLU with 17 points – including a career-high 4 3-pointers – while grabbing 7 rebounds and handing out 4 assists. Monteroso added 15 points with Hoehn knocking down a dozen.
Brady Arnold finished with 11 points while Guillozet and
James Griffin rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points each.
Will Vorhees paced five double-figure scorers for the Falcons with 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Scarberry had 15 points, all coming on five second-half 3-pointers, while Kyauta Taylor, Jay Banyasz and Oliver Megins tossed in 10 points each. Banyasz also cleared a game-high 10 rebounds to give him a double-double.
West Liberty returns to action on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Charleston.
