Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Senior All-American
Seger Bonifant poured in 30 points to lead unbeaten and No. 1-ranked West Liberty to a 125-78 rout of Glenville State
Sunday afternoon at the ASRC.
The Pioneers (6-7, 3-4) hit the first basket of the game but Coach
Jim Crutchfield's high-flying Hilltoppers (13-0, 7-0) answered with a 7-point burst over the next 90 seconds and kept their foot on the accelerator the rest of the way.
Bonifant – the nation's leading scorer at 27.2 ppg. – knocked down 23 of his game-high 30 points in the opening half as West Liberty raced off to a 63-39 lead at intermission.
The second half was more of the same as the Hilltoppers finished the game shooting a blistering 61 percent (41-of-67) from the floor, including a 56 percent (13-of-23) showing from behind the 3-point arc. The Black and Gold also helped themselves at the charity stripe by draining 30-of-37 free throws – 27-of-31 in the second half alone.
It marked the ninth time in 13 games that West Liberty has shot better than 50 percent from the floor and the second time WLU's shooting percentage has pushed above 60 percent.
Crutchfield's Hilltoppers are 105-1 over the past five seasons when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor and the veteran head coach says that's no accident.
"There's more to good shooting nights than just getting hot," Crutchfield said. "Good shooting nights are generally good passing nights and good cutting nights because that's what creates good scoring opportunities.
"We've been running our stuff pretty well the last few games and when you're picking up some transition baskets along with shooting a good percentage from the 3-point arc, you're going to have some good shooting nights."
Bonifant had plenty of company in the scoring column as he was only one of six double-figure scorers for the hosts.
Senior wing
Mike Lamberti came off the bench to make a run at a triple-double with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists while freshman guard
David Dennis just missed a double-double with 16 points and 9 assists.
Eric Meininger weighed in with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals in just 9 minutes of action while
Devin Hoehn finished with 11 points and
Brady Arnold added 10 points before fouling out.
"Mike had a really good game and I thought the guys off the bench gave us a big lift tonight in general," Crutchfield said. "Our intensity seemed to ratchet up a notch when that first rotation came in and we were able to open things up a little bit."
Glenville's Tonnie Collier had 16 of his team-high 21 points after halftime. Brett Morris and Sedric Nady joined him in double figures with 19 and 13 points, respectively.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Tuesday night when they host West Virginia Wesleyan in a 7:30 p.m. game at the ASRC.
