Box Score ATHENS, W.Va. –
Zac Grossenbacher came off the bench to hit two clutch 3-pointers early in overtime here
Saturday as unbeaten and No. 1-ranked West Liberty outlasted an upset-minded Concord squad, 113-107, in overtime at the Carter Center.
The 6-8 Grossenbacher hadn't scored during regulation but got Coach
Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers (10-0, 5-0) off to a flying start in overtime when he won the opening tip and drained a 3-pointer from the wing just 19 seconds later for a 102-99 West Liberty lead.
After the Hilltoppers'
Devin Hoehn and the Mountain Lions' Terry Hopewell traded baskets, Grossenbacher stepped out to drop a dagger of a 3-pointer to make it 107-101 with just under 3 minutes left in the extra period. Concord (6-4, 2-3) never threatened again as WLU went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute.
West Liberty had come roaring out of the blocks and led by as many as 21 points, 37-16, in the opening half before taking a 58-43 edge into the locker room at the break.
The Mountain Lions bounced back with a vengeance when play resumed, blistering the twine at nearly a 70 percent clip the rest of the way.
Concord took its first lead of the second half, 84-82, on an Aaron Miller 3-pointer with 5:49 left in regulation but they were far from finished.
The hosts eventually pushed the margin out to 7 points, 94-87, when B.J. Hamlet splashed home a pair of free throws after drawing the fifth foul on WLU's
Indiana Faithfull with
3:06 on the clock.
Seger Bonifant answered with a pair of free throws but Concord's Jametrius Wade followed in his own miss to restore the 7-point margin, 96-89, with
2:24 to go.
With its back to the wall, the nation's No. 1 team responded.
Bonifant and
C.J. Hester nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to close the gap to 96-95 with
1:32 remaining. Bonifant – the nation's leading scorer – would eventually hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 99-99 with 40 ticks left.
Both teams had a chance to win in regulation but neither could get their shot to fall, setting the stage for West Liberty to close things out in overtime.
Bonifant finished with a game-high 30 points – his fifth 30-point game of the season – to lead all scorers while Hester checked in with 27 points and a dozen rebounds for his fourth consecutive double-double. Sophomore
Brandon Smith came off the bench to hit some clutch 3-pointers for a career-high 14 points while Hoehn added 13 points and 5 assists.
Hopewell and Wade tallied 26 and 20 points, respectively, to lead five double-figure scorers for the hosts.
The Hilltoppers return to action Monday night with a 7:30 p.m. game at UVA-Wise.
