SCOTT, EARGLE, ZIMMERMAN CLAIM TOP WVIAC BASKETBALL HONORS
(PRINCETON, W.VA)---WVIAC regular season champion Alderson-Broaddus has claimed two of the league's top three men's basketball honors. A-B head coach Greg Zimmerman has been honored by his peers as the Coach of the Year for a second straight season, while Battler point guard Terrell Eargle is the WVIAC Freshman of the Year. West Virginia State guard Ted Scott won an exceptionally close three-way race over Concord's Tyrone Anderson and West Liberty State's Corey McDuffie to be named WVIAC Player of the Year.
Scott scored at least a dozen points in each contest on his way to a league-leading 26.2 points per game. The Columbus, Ohio junior was named the WVIAC Player of the Week four times and earned Division II Bulletin national Player of the Month honors for January. The sharp-shooting guard crossed the 30-mark 11 times for the year, with a high of 43 points versus nationally ranked West Liberty State. Scott also ranked among the WVIAC leaders in three-point field goals (100), three-point field goal percentage (.444), and field goal percentage (.526).
WVSU head coach Bryan Poore praised his star guard: "Ted is an unbelievable player, but he's just as good of a kid. He's a joy to be around and coach. He really came into his own this year. There's no doubt that he thinks he can score on anybody at any time."
"A big part of the credit goes to our team," continued Poore. "They came to the realization that he is our scorer and he'll take some bad shots on occasion. They've learned to play through it. None of this happens without the other guys getting him the ball and setting screens."
Eargle's maturation as the Alderson-Broaddus point guard played a key role in the Battlers' 18-0 WVIAC regular season record. The Youngstown, OH native averages 10.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. He has scored in double figures during A-B's final eleven regular season contests, including a 17-point, 17-rebound effort in an overtime win at West Virginia State.
"We found a very special player," said A-B mentor Greg Zimmerman. "We knew that he had the talent. Once he understood we wanted, it took our program to new levels. He's a long, athletic player, who's the first pure point guard that we've had here in a while."
Zimmerman becomes the first WVIAC Men's Coach of the Year to repeat the honor since Charleston's Tex Williams was named the league's top coach in 1986 and 1987. His Battlers completed the first unbeaten WVIAC men's basketball regular season since Salem-Teikyo's 19-0 mark in 1997. The 22-4 squad is ranked third in the East Region and is knocking on the door of the national ratings.
The former A-B standout has led his alma mater to back-to-back regular season titles. He claims three WVIAC Tournament championships and a 146-40 overall record on his six-year resume as the head coach of the Battlers. His teams have not finished below second in the league regular season standings and are 93-15 in league games since the Ragersville, Ohio native's arrival as the A-B mentor.
McDuffie and Anderson are among the four repeat selections on the All-WVIAC first team squad. Beckley native Shane Maynard (West Liberty State) and all-time conference steals leader Shaun McKie (Salem International) are the other first team repeat honorees. McKie is the lone three-time first team All-WVIAC pick on this year's team.
Scott, Stan Hall (Alderson-Broaddus), Anthony Harper (Alderson-Broaddus), Danley Shank (Shepherd), and Ricky Yahn (Wheeling Jesuit) round out the first team all-conference aggregation.
