(PRINCETON, W.Va.)---WVIAC men's basketball coaches have selected West Virginia State senior Ted Scott as the league's 2008-09 Player of the Year. High-scoring Wheeling Jesuit rookie Cedric Harris earned the nod as the WVIAC Freshman of the Year. West Virginia State head coach Bryan Poore was recognized by his peers as the WVIAC Coach of the Year after leading the Yellow Jackets to the regular season title.
Scott, the 2006-07 WVIAC Player of the Year, bounced back from a serious knee injury that caused him to miss last season. His 23.5 points per game rank second in the WVIAC and among the top five nationally in Division II. The Columbus, OH native tallied more than 30 points on five occasions this season as the Jackets have rolled to a 23-4 overall record entering this week's WVIAC Tournament.
The 6-1 guard is shooting just over 50 percent on the season. He also contributes 3.0 rebounds and 2.7 rebounds per game for the WVIAC regular season champions. Scott's 2301 career points rank him second all-time in the rich history of West Virginia State basketball.
"It's rewarding to see him come back to full strength after the knee injury and surgery," said Poore of his star pupil. "His hard work deserves a lot of credit and a lot of credit goes to the rest of our players. The year off helped Ted in some ways. He sees the game better. We told him that he didn't have score 28 points per game for us to succeed this year. He's really done a great job in making his teammates better."
Harris made an immediate impact in the Wheeling Jesuit backcourt, averaging a team-best 19.3 points and 5.7 assists per game. The Zanesville, OH speedster also recorded 52 steals to lead the Cardinals. He has converted 74 of 80 free throws to top the WVIAC at 92.5 percent from the line. Harris tallied 20 or more points on 15 occasions, including a pair of 29-point outputs on his way to becoming the first Wheeling Jesuit player to earn league Freshman of the Year accolades.
Poore grabs his second WVIAC Coach of the Year (2004) honor of his career after State won 19 of 20 league contests. The Winfield native has guided the Jackets to at least 19 victories in each of the past six seasons and owns a 193-104 record in ten seasons at West Virginia State.
In addition to Scott, the nine-player All-WVIAC first team squad is highlighted by a pair of explosive guards that are no strangers to all-conference awards. Fairmont State's Thad McFadden is a back-to-back first teamer after leading the WVIAC in scoring during the regular season at 24.8 points per game. Alderson-Broaddus senior Stan Hall, who ranks third in league scoring with 23.1 points per game, earns his third All-WVIAC first team plaque.
The remainder of the first team All-WVIAC squad consists of Pitt Johnstown teammates Quinton Davis and Marcus Tullis, West Liberty sharpshooter Ben Howlett, Glenville State three-point specialist Tryvan Leech, Alderson-Broaddus long-range bomber Sam Liggins, and West Virginia State double-double threat Ricky Jackson.
