Hilltoppers Host Concord Sunday with Outright MEC Title on the Line

2/21/2026 12:00:00 PM

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The stakes couldn't be higher Sunday afternoon inside the ASRC as the West Liberty University men's basketball team hosts Concord University at 4 p.m.

With a win, the Hilltoppers (22-3, 17-1 MEC) would secure the Mountain East Conference regular season championship outright — their ninth straight and 12th overall in just 13 seasons of MEC competition.

West Liberty has already clinched at least a share of the title and enters Sunday riding a 12-game winning streak, including a 95-80 victory at Glenville State on Wednesday. The Hilltoppers are a perfect 13-0 at home this season.

Nationally Elite Production

West Liberty continues to rank among the nation's best in multiple NCAA Division II statistical categories:

  • No. 2 in Scoring Offense (98.4 ppg)

  • No. 7 in Scoring Margin (+16.5)

  • No. 4 in Steals Per Game (12.0)

  • No. 4 in Turnover Margin (+7.4)

  • No. 3 in Turnovers Forced Per Game (19.8)

  • No. 12 in Assist/Turnover Ratio (1.50)

  • No. 1 in Bench Points Per Game (48.2)

The Hilltoppers lead the MEC in scoring offense (98.4), assists (18.7), steals (12.0) and turnover margin (+7.4), while shooting an efficient 48.8 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from three-point range.

Their depth remains a defining characteristic. Nine players average at least 6.0 points per game, led by Jamie Muldowney (13.8 ppg), Myles Montgomery (12.7 ppg), Cameron Williams (12.2 ppg) and Dante Spadafora (10.7). Peter Lattos adds 8.6 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting a remarkable 64.4 percent from the field.

Concord (13-12, 9-8 MEC) enters Sunday battling for conference tournament positioning. The Mountain Lions are averaging 82.7 points per game and lead the MEC in free-throw percentage (.778) while ranking second in rebounding (40.8 rpg).

Boubacar Djigo (15.6 ppg, 13.2 rpg) anchors the paint, while Micah Young (15.3 ppg) and Anfernee Hanna (14.3 ppg) provide perimeter scoring.

When the teams met earlier this season in Athens, West Liberty delivered a 102-70 victory behind a balanced offensive attack and defensive pressure that forced 18 turnovers.

The Hilltoppers hold a 56-33 all-time edge in the series and have won four straight against the Mountain Lions, including last year's MEC Tournament matchup.

Sunday presents more than just another conference game. It's a chance for West Liberty to add another chapter to one of the most dominant runs in MEC history.

A victory would mark:

  • 9 straight MEC regular season championships

  • 12 MEC titles in 13 seasons

  • An undefeated 14-0 record at home this season

Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at the ASRC as the Hilltoppers look to secure the title outright in front of the Black & Gold faithful.
