West Liberty, W.Va. - Few names in West Liberty University men's basketball history carry the weight of Spencer Johnson.
A standout from 1980–1984 and a member of the WLU Hall of Fame Class of 1991, Johnson cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in West Virginia Conference history. The Hilltoppers' first 2,000-point scorer, he rewrote the record book during four remarkable seasons on the hilltop.
A Record-Setting Career
Johnson never missed a game in his West Liberty career — a testament to both his durability and consistency. A three-time All-WVIAC selection and NAIA All-American, he burst onto the scene by earning All-Freshman Team honors before quickly rising to national prominence.
He scored his 1,000th career point early in his junior season and capped his senior campaign by leading the conference in scoring with a school-record 697 points — averaging better than 24 points per game. Johnson finished his career with a then-school record 2,137 points, many of which still stand among the best in program history.
He also led the scoring at the 1984 WVIAC Tournament, earning first-team All-WVIAC honors and NAIA All-American recognition before taking his game overseas.
Following graduation with a degree in Business, Johnson began a professional career in Europe. While playing in Austria, he was averaging an eye-popping 38 points per game before a severe ankle injury prematurely ended his time on the court.
Life After Basketball
Today, Johnson has spent the past 40 years running his own remodeling business in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area — applying the same work ethic and discipline that defined his playing career.
More Than Basketball
While the records and accolades define his athletic legacy, Johnson's favorite memories aren't found in a box score.
"Midnight snowball fights on the Quad during the first snowfall every year," Johnson recalls. "And all the friends I made during my time at West Liberty — not just on the basketball team, but other athletes and students in my classes."
The bonds formed during those years remain strong. Under the guidance of legendary head coach Paul Holzshu, Johnson says the team became family.
"Coach Holzshu was a very father-like figure to his players," Johnson said. "All my teammates went from having two brothers to 17 brothers. We still stay in contact, text each other regularly, and return every year for homecoming."
Words for the Next Generation
Johnson's advice for today's student-athletes is simple and heartfelt:
"Be a student first and let the athlete come to you. You will meet more friends that way and make lasting relationships."
Black & Gold Forever
When asked what it means to be an alumnus of West Liberty, Johnson doesn't hesitate.
"Pride. Great Black and Gold pride!!!"
Decades after his final game, Spencer Johnson's impact continues to resonate — in the record book, in the Hall of Fame, and in the lifelong brotherhood forged on the Hilltop.
