WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's basketball team returns home Wednesday evening to face Mountain East Conference leader Glenville State in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff at the ASRC.
The Hilltoppers enter the matchup at 5-8 overall and 2-4 in MEC play, looking to bounce back after a road setback at Fairmont State. Glenville State arrives in West Liberty riding an eight-game winning streak and sits atop the conference standings at 11-2 overall and 6-1 in league action.
West Liberty has shown balance on the offensive end, averaging 72.2 points per game, ranking fifth in the MEC. The Hilltoppers are one of the league's most dangerous perimeter teams, sitting second in the conference in 3-point field goals made (7.7 per game). Senior Anna Lucarelli leads the offense at 15.8 points per game, while Jameka Brungard (10.8 ppg) and Ana-Isabel Andersson (10.7 ppg) also average double figures. Brungard anchors the interior, pulling down a team-best 7.2 rebounds per contest.
Defensively, West Liberty has forced opponents into nearly 18.5 turnovers per game, while ranking third in the MEC in assists (13.8 per game) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio. The Hilltoppers will look to improve on the glass, where they face one of the league's stronger rebounding teams in Glenville State.
The Pioneers boast the MEC's top-scoring offense at 86.7 points per game and lead the conference in 3-point field goals made (9.0 per game) and steals (15.3 per game). Glenville State features a deep and balanced lineup with five players averaging at least 8.0 points per game, led by Carine Pinkney (13.5 ppg), Nwando Okigbo (11.2 ppg) and Ashlyn Riley (11.1 ppg).
Historically, Glenville State has held the upper hand in the series, with West Liberty owning a 22-52 all-time record against the Pioneers. The Hilltoppers, however, will look to defend their home court and snap a recent skid in the rivalry as conference play intensifies.
