Second-Quarter Drought Costly as Hilltoppers Fall at Fairmont State`

1/10/2026 4:38:00 PM

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — West Liberty University suffered a 76-54 setback to Fairmont State on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena, as a prolonged second-quarter scoring drought proved too much to overcome.

The Hilltoppers trailed by just two points after the opening quarter but managed only three points in the second period, allowing the Falcons to seize control. Fairmont State capitalized on 27 West Liberty turnovers, converting them into 29 points to maintain its advantage despite a strong late push by the Hilltoppers.

West Liberty fell behind early as Fairmont State jumped out to an eight-point lead, fueled by turnovers. The Hilltoppers responded with a strong rally, highlighted by an Olivia Baker three-pointer at the 2:37 mark and a pair of free throws from Reagan Vinskovich with 1:05 remaining to tie the game at 12. Fairmont State closed the quarter with two free throws to take a narrow 14-12 lead.

The second quarter proved decisive as West Liberty struggled to find offensive rhythm, shooting just 1-of-17 from the field. Baker's three-pointer at 8:05 — assisted by Katie Lucarelli — accounted for the Hilltoppers' only basket of the period. Fairmont State took full advantage, outscoring WLU 19-3 and extending the margin to 33-15 at halftime.

West Liberty was unable to regain momentum in the third quarter despite early baskets from Jameka Brungard, who converted a layup and jumper to open the half. Turnovers and missed opportunities continued to plague the Hilltoppers, while Fairmont State leaned on consistent scoring at the free-throw line and a late three-pointer to push the lead to 59-27 heading into the final period.

The Hilltoppers showed resilience in the fourth quarter, opening with a quick six-point burst behind consecutive baskets from Brungard. Anna Lucarelli knocked down a three-pointer at 6:37, again assisted by Katie Lucarelli, as West Liberty trimmed into the deficit. Dria Parker added a late three-pointer with 2:01 remaining, but Fairmont State maintained control to close out the 76-54 win.

Brungard led West Liberty with 14 points and eight rebounds, knocking down a team-high seven field goals. Anna Lucarelli finished with 11 points, while Vinskovich added nine points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Katie Lucarelli contributed three steals, three assists, and steady floor leadership.

West Liberty returns home on Wednesday, hosting Glenville State at 5:30 p.m. inside the ASRC.
