WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team hits the road Wednesday evening for a Mountain East Conference matchup at Frostburg State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Frostburg, Md.
The Hilltoppers (1-1-2, 0-0-2 MEC) are coming off a strong start to the season that has featured stout defense and timely scoring. Sophomore forward Travis Scandalis, the reigning MEC Offensive Player of the Week, leads the attack with two goals, including last weekend's game-winner in a 2-0 victory over Cal U. Freshman Oskar Voges has added a goal and an assist, while senior Lachlan Quate has chipped in two assists.
West Liberty has scored five goals in its first four matches while holding opponents to just five. The Hilltoppers are averaging 10.0 shots per contest, with over half of those efforts landing on target (.525 SOG%). Between the posts, Emil Vernhamn has posted a shutout and a perfect save percentage in two appearances, while Shai'ya Henry has added 12 saves in three starts.
Frostburg State (1-1-1, 1-1 MEC) enters the match after splitting its opening conference games. The Bobcats average 1.67 goals per game behind a balanced scoring effort led by Frank Stare, Nathan Kennedy, and Dominic Good, who have each tallied once this fall. In goal, Jan Foret has been steady with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .813 save percentage.
Recent history between the two programs has been tightly contested. The teams met three times last season, with Frostburg taking two of the matches and West Liberty earning a 2-1 win on the road in October.
