ATHENS, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team saw its postseason run come to a close Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-2 to Concord University in the Mountain East Conference Semifinal at Callaghan Stadium.
The Hilltoppers struck in both halves and battled to the final whistle, but a late Concord goal proved to be the difference as the Mountain Lions advanced to the MEC Championship match.
Travis Scandalis and Lachlan Quate each found the back of the net for West Liberty, while goalkeeper Shai'ya Fitzgerald turned away four shots in a strong defensive effort.
West Liberty opened the match with early pressure, as Scandalis forced a save from Concord keeper Miguel Oliveira in just the second minute. The Mountain Lions broke through first in the 23rd minute on a goal from Malher Santi Possu, assisted by Zakari Messam.
The Hilltoppers answered quickly, leveling the match just three minutes later when Scandalis buried an equalizer to make it 1-1 at the half.
Concord reclaimed the lead early in the second half when Santiago Lopez scored in the 60th minute. Again, West Liberty responded—this time with Quate finishing a cross in the 66th minute to tie the match 2-2. But Concord found the winner just two minutes later as Possu netted his second of the day, assisted by Dominique Malhomme.
Despite creating chances down the stretch, the Hilltoppers couldn't find a third equalizer and fell by a narrow 3-2 margin.
West Liberty concludes its season with a 7-9-4 record, capping a historic year that included the program's first-ever MEC Tournament win. "We gave it our all today," said head coach Sean Regan. "Every last ounce of blood, sweat, and tears was left on that pitch. I'm very proud of the lads today."
