Sean Regan enters his eighth season as head coach of the West Liberty University men's soccer program after leading the Hilltoppers through one of the most successful campaigns in school history.
The 2025 season proved to be a breakthrough year for the Black and Gold as West Liberty earned its fourth consecutive Mountain East Conference Tournament appearance and captured the program's first-ever postseason victory, defeating Point Park, 3-0, in the MEC Tournament quarterfinals before advancing to the conference semifinals.
Along the way, the Hilltoppers produced several signature moments, including one of the biggest victories in program history with a 1-0 upset of No. 10 Concord, marking just the second win over a nationally ranked opponent in school history. West Liberty also secured a postseason berth for the fourth straight season while continuing to establish itself as one of the conference's rising programs.
Regan's 2025 squad was recognized with three All-Mountain East Conference selections. Freshman midfielder Ethan Nethery, sophomore defender Lachlan Quate, and junior defender Jasper Newton each earned All-MEC Honorable Mention honors. Nethery made an immediate impact by starting every match in his freshman campaign, while Quate followed up his All-Freshman Team season by anchoring the Hilltopper defense. Newton earned his second consecutive All-MEC honor after helping lead one of the conference's top defensive units.
The Hilltoppers also continued to excel in the classroom under Regan's leadership. Joao Victor Sylvino, Jasper Newton, and Oskar Voges were each named to the 2025 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, recognizing their achievements both academically and athletically.
The Hilltoppers have now qualified for the MEC Tournament in each of the past four seasons under Regan. During his tenure, West Liberty has continued to elevate the program, producing two First Team All-MEC selections, six Second Team honorees, 13 Honorable Mention All-MEC selections, five MEC All-Freshman Team selections.
A well-known figure in Ohio Valley soccer circles, Regan was no stranger to the local soccer scene when he took the reins at West Liberty in March 2019. The son of Bethany College Hall of Famer and longtime Wheeling University coach Jim Regan, Sean grew up immersed in the game. As a collegiate player, he earned All-Conference honors on a pair of nationally ranked teams under his father at Wheeling University before transitioning into coaching.
Regan began his coaching career in 2005 as an assistant at Washington & Jefferson (Pa.), helping guide the Presidents to their first-ever Presidents' Athletic Conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. The following year, he accepted the head coaching position at Bethany College, his father's alma mater.
During his 10-year tenure at Bethany, Regan developed numerous All-PAC performers and guided the Bison to multiple postseason appearances, including a trip to the ECAC regional semifinals in 2010. That season, he was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.
Regan and his wife, Rikki, reside in Wheeling with their two sons, Liam and Declan.
