ATHENS, W.Va. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team looks to continue its historic postseason run Wednesday night when it travels to Callaghan Stadium to face No. 2 seed Concord University in the Mountain East Conference Semifinals. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Hilltoppers (7-8-4) enter the semifinal riding a wave of momentum after earning the first playoff victory in program history — a 3–0 shutout over Point Park on Sunday at Highmark Stadium. West Liberty struck twice in the first half and added an insurance goal in the second to secure the milestone win, with Ethan Nethery, Travis Scandalis, and Alex Watt all finding the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Shai'ya Fitzgerald anchored the defense with six saves in the clean sheet, helping the Hilltoppers advance to the conference's final four for the first time since the program's inception.
West Liberty now turns its attention to a familiar foe in Concord. The two teams split their regular-season meetings, each winning at home.
In West Liberty's 1–0 victory on Sept. 21, the Hilltoppers earned one of the biggest results in program history, shutting out the then-No. 10 nationally ranked Mountain Lions at the West Family Complex. Alex Watt's first-half goal proved to be the difference, while Emil Vernhamn made four saves to secure the clean sheet.
Concord returned the favor with a 2–1 win on Nov. 1 in Athens. Leandre Tyssandier netted the Hilltoppers' lone goal in the 67th minute, but the comeback fell short despite a late surge from West Liberty.
Head coach Sean Regan knows the margins will be razor-thin once again when the sides meet for a third time this season. "We are looking forward to the semifinal against Concord," Regan said. "Both regular-season games were extremely tight, with very few things separating the two sides. The biggest advantage Concord has is hosting on their extremely small field. The boys are riding high with confidence after winning our last two games, and we're looking forward to rising to the occasion."
The winner of Wednesday's matchup will advance to the MEC Championship on Sunday against the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Charleston and No.2 seed Davis & Elkins.
