West Liberty Hosts Point Park Saturday In Their MEC Opener

12/5/2025 4:00:00 PM

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Fresh off a dominant fourth quarter that sealed a 71–50 victory over Salem, the West Liberty University women's basketball team opens Mountain East Conference play at home Saturday at 2 p.m. against Point Park inside the ASRC.

The Hilltoppers (3–3) look to build momentum after one of their most complete defensive efforts of the season. West Liberty held Salem to just four made field goals in the fourth quarter while erupting for 25 points to blow open what had been a tight game. Four Hilltoppers scored in double figures, highlighted by Jameka Brungard's overwhelming 17-point, 20-rebound double-double.

Offensively, West Liberty continues to score at a strong clip, averaging 76.3 points per game while shooting 43.7% from the field and 31.3% from three. Senior guard Anna Lucarelli leads the attack with 17.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while Ana-Isabel Andersson (13.7 ppg).

The Hilltoppers have also been effective at getting to the free-throw line, averaging 16.7 made free throws per game — more than three above their opponents' average.

Rebounding remains a key focus. Despite a season average of 36.2 boards per game, WLU enters with a slight rebounding deficit (-2.5). Brungard's emergence in the post has helped stabilize the interior, as she leads the team at 8.7 rebounds per game.

Point Park (2-2, 0-1) enters Saturday looking to bounce back from a 67–53 loss at Wheeling. The Pioneers have been one of the top rebounding teams in the early going, posting an eye-catching +11.3 rebounding margin and averaging 48.3 rebounds per game.

The offense runs through the trio of Camille Fultz (13.0 ppg), Elizabeth Boyd (12.5 ppg, 10.8 rpg), and Alexis Giles (10.5 ppg). Boyd.

Turnovers, however, have been an early-season issue for the Pioneers. Point Park averages 21.3 giveaways per game, which could play directly into West Liberty's pressure defense that forces nearly eight steals per contest.

Matchup History

This will be the first meeting between the programs this season. West Liberty swept the series last year, winning 75–66 at home and 68–56 on the road during the 2024–25 campaign.
