BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — After a record-setting performance in West Liberty's 35–11 road win over West Virginia Wesleyan, junior running back Hunter Patterson has been named the Mountain East Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, presented by The Health Plan, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Patterson delivered one of the most dominant rushing performances in the MEC this season, exploding for a career-high 247 yards and three touchdowns on just 17 carries. The Chester, W.Va. native averaged an incredible 14.5 yards per carry, breaking off touchdown runs of 84, 20, and 46 yards to power the Hilltoppers to victory.
His efforts helped West Liberty pile up 342 rushing yards and secure the program's first road win of the season — a performance that also marked head coach Roger Waialae's 100th career victory at the helm of the Hilltoppers.
Patterson's 247-yard outing ranks second in single-game rushing totals in the MEC this season and is the third most in a game in the WLU modern era.. His 84-yard touchdown run in the second quarter shifted the momentum squarely in West Liberty's favor, and he continued to wear down the Wesleyan defense throughout the afternoon.
The Hilltoppers (2–5, 2–2 MEC) will look to build on the momentum from Saturday's win as they return home for Homecoming Week. West Liberty will host Glenville State on Saturday, October 25, at 1 p.m. at West Family Stadium.
