West Liberty, W.Va. - The West Liberty women's basketball team won their Mountain East Conference opener 75-66 over Point Park Saturday at the ASRC. With the win the Toppers improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the MEC.
The Hilltoppers came out strong going up 13, 20-7 with 2:37 left and led 21-15 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Toppers continued to stay on top and enjoyed a 38-30 lead at the break. Seven Hilltoppeers got into the scorebook in the opening half, led by Karli Anker and her nine points.
In the third quarter, the Toppers would go up 11 ,43-32 on a Bailee Smith three with 9:01 left, but the Pioneers would out score West Liberty 18-7 the rest of the quarter to tie the game at 50 after three.
The Hilltoppers would open the fourth quarter on a 10-4 run to take charge of the game on their way to the win.
Jenna Riccardo led the Topper attack with a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds. Karli Anker added 18 points and six rebounds and Bailee Smith had 14 points, four assists and four rebounds.
Bailee Smith and Jenna Riccardo each cleared a career milestone in the game. With her four assists Smith now has 202 career assists. Riccardo pulled down 14 rebounds to give her 308 in her career.
